Crocus

The blooming of the Crocus flower signals the arrival of the warm weather. A native of Southern Europe and Asia, the name of the flower is the Latin for ‘saffron.’ The saffron spice comes from the saffron crocus or Crocus sativus. Saffron is currently one of the most valued spices in the world.

The crocus plant is small, and it grows 20 to 31 cm in height. It grows a single cup-shaped flower connected to a long tube. Its bloom contains six petals and features colourful, vibrant shades. Some of these shades are mauve, lavender, blue, orange, yellow, cream and white. The plant also has narrow, grass-like foliage.
