Tithonia

Tithonia

The Mexican Sunflower, tree marigold or tithonia is a bright yellow or orange-red flower with a yellow disk at the centre. The centre measures approximately 5 to 8 cm. It is known to have foliage and stems covered in fuzz and the underside of its leaves are hairy.

On average, the tithonia plant grows to a height of one to two metres. Because of this, it is best planted at the back of borders or beds to form a backdrop for shorter plants. You can mix tithonia with tall zinnias or some other flower in vibrant colours to complement the energy and brilliance of the orange-red. Adding purple flowers and plants with dark foliage can tone down the bright colour of tithonia.
